Bed
Rest - For an acute back ache
the first thing you should do is rest. This might be the only
thing that you would want to do as even the smallest activity
(even getting up to use the bathroom) could cause back pain.
But do not rest for to long. For every week of bed rest, it
takes two weeks to rehabilitate. |
| Ice
Pack - The best way to cool
down an acute back ache is with an ice pack. It will help
reduce the swelling and the strain of your muscles. For an
even better result use the ice massage. Put an ice pack on
the back where the pain is and massage the spot for 7 or 8
minutes. |
|
| Swimming
- The best exercise for acute
lower back pain is to get into a warm pool and swim. |

Heat
Pack - After a day or two of
using the ice pack it's time to switch to the heat pack. You
could also use a warm towel. Place a soft towel in warm water,
then wring it well lay the towel flat. Lay on your stomach
on the towel and wrap the towel over your back. Now wrap the
towel with plastic wrap or cling wrap. It will also help to
place something on top such as a book to apply pressure. This
creates moist heat and will help reduce muscle spasms. |
|
Stretch
- Stretching a sore back will
enhance the healing process. A good way to stretch your
back is to lay on a bed on your back. Slowly bring your
knees up to your chest and gently pull down on your knees.
Then straighten your legs back down flat and repeat. This
will help the muscle calm down sooner than if you left it
to calm down on it's own.

Rest
in an S position - When laying
down place a pillow under your head and neck. With your
back flat put another pillow under your knees. When you
lay with your legs straight your hamstring muscles pull
which puts pressure on your lower back. Sleeping with a
pillow under your knees will slacken the hamstring muscles
and take pressure off your back.

Take
an aspirin each day - Back pain
is often accompanied by inflammation around the site of the
pain. Either Aspirin or ibuprofen will help in reducing the
inflammation. It can help with even severe amounts of inflammation. |
